Wight picks off Week 3 win for player vote

Posted

A near-record tally in player of the week voting saw four players garner more than 1,000 votes, and two defensive players duel for honors.

In all, 12,736 votes were cast for Week 3.

Mountain Ridge senior cornerback Richard Wight  outlasted Centennial senior free safety Devin Sanchez. Wight finished with 4,770 votes to Sanchez's 3,349.

Wight had three interceptions, five tackles and two passes defended in the Mountain Lions' 28-10 upset of Notre Dame Prep Oct. 16.

Sanchez stood out in the Coyotes' defensive minded 14-8 win at Gilbert Williams Field. He had 12 tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss.

Dysart senior running back Gabriel Slivas placed third with 1,396 votes. He rushed for 110 yards and three touchdowns during the Demons 58-38 victory at Kingman.

For the fifth straight year, player of the week honorees, including Wight will win more than bragging rights.

Celebrity Tux and Tails, returns as the sponsor of the player of the Week poll. The store, at 9240 W. Northern Ave., Suite 103-A in Peoria, will provide each winner a free rental redeemable any time this school year.
