Wellness spa Salted Desert is now open in Peoria.

Owners and Peoria residents Jen and Pete Grant said the new business offers a unique breathing experience in the form of a dry salt inhalation therapy, or Halotherapy.

Ms. Grant said the drug-free, non-invasive dry salt inhalation therapy has been used throughout the world for its positive impact on certain respiratory and skin conditions. Several European countries have constructed salt therapy treatment facilities inside natural salt mines.

“Salted Desert provides clients a 10-minute dry salt inhalation session within one of our private salt booths. Typical European salting sessions are done in a group setting and can take up to 60 minutes,” she said. “Salt has been used since ancient times for its healing properties in both respiratory and skin conditions. Salt is naturally absorbent and can help the body eliminate toxins.”

Mr. and Ms. Grant have formal education in health-related fields, and had business planning assistance provided by mentorship through the Small Business Administration.

Ms. Grant has trained as a licensed massage therapist with a degree in social services and nutrition. Mr. Grant has been a critical care registered nurse for 13 years, and is employed by a well known healthcare system.

Dry salt therapy was developed in Russia as a way to re-create the micro-climate of natural salt mines, Ms. Grant said.

“Within the salt mines, fine particles suspend throughout the air that is then inhaled into the lungs. European physicians began to notice the overall good respiratory health of the salt miners in comparison to other types of mining,” she said. “Now Halotherapy is beginning to grow in popularity as a complimentary alternative medicine. Not just localized to Europe any longer, halotherapy has seen explosive growth in America. Many Americans are seeking a natural, drug-free alternative that may offer some relief in many common health conditions.”

Dry salt therapy has been profiled on media such as Dr. Oz, CNN, and ABC News.
