Update of Peoria's fleet shop planned for  2022

Welcome to an ongoing series informing residents about city projects that affect them directly. The Peoria Independent features capital improvement projects that have begun construction, are in design, or planned for the future.

Project: Fleet shop replacement

Description: The current shop is almost 30 years old and needs major repairs, according to the city’s Capital Improvement Program. The facility is outdated and does not meet the needs of current and future vehicle count, with several units worked on outside of the existing building due to insufficient space. This creates several issues and hinders the mechanics’ productivity, city officials say.

A new 45,000 square foot facility is planned to meet current and future needs.

Phase 1 is the renovation of the existing 20,000 square foot building. Major repairs include roof repair at $35,000, rain gutters replacement at $45,000, a new air compressor system, a new fluid distribution system, coolers replaced at $20,000, and a safety harness system for working on large trucks. The repairs will keep the building functional until a new facility can be built.

Status: Design will take place in fiscal year 2022. Construction is planned for fiscal year 2024.

Budget: Total is $15 million. About $2.2 million in fiscal year 2022 and $12.8 million in fiscal year 2024.
