A traffic collision in Peoria has resulted in a fatality.

Peoria Police and Peoria Fire-Medical responded to an injury collision near 91st Avenue and Hearn Road 4:28 a.m. May 7.

The collision involved two vehicles: a black 2018 Mercedes Benz C Class and a gray 2017 Dodge Ram 1500.

Preliminary investigation revealed that both vehicles were traveling southbound on 91st Avenue as they approached Hearn Road. The Mercedes Benz, which was driving on a flat front tire, struck a nearby curb before rear-ending the Dodge Ram.

Following the initial collision, the Mercedes Benz lost control and crashed into a tree located in the center median.

The driver of the Mercedes Benz was pronounced dead at the scene, and has been identified as 69-year-old Donald Schmitt Jr., from Peoria.

The driver of the Dodge Ram sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

The Peoria Police Department’s Traffic Services Unit is investigating this incident.
