A former student athlete from Sunrise Mountain High School, 21200 N. 83rd Ave., Peoria, earned All-American Scholar honors at the University of Oklahoma.

Blake Lorenz, the 2017 Division II boys golf state champion with the Mustangs, was among the 376 student athletes named Division I Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced.

In 2019-20, the sophomore competed in the Carmel Cup for the Sooners. Mr. Lorenz posted a 69 in his opening round and finished one over par for the tournament. The Peoria native’s top-33 finish aided the Sooners to a second place finish in their opening tournament of the season.

“Blake has done a great job in the classroom since he has been with us,” head coach Ryan Hybl stated in a news release. “He has earned everything to become an Academic All-America.”

To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team’s competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
