Peoria has one of the best high schools in the U.S. in the form of a local charter school, while Peoria Unified School District schools are providing a quality education, according to a new report out this week.

The annual U.S. News & World Report ranking of U.S. high schools found one of the Basis schools as the tops in Peoria. Basis Peoria, 9902 W. Yearling Road, ranked as best ranked in the city, No. 4 in Arizona and No. 33 nationally.

Schools developed by Scottsdale-based Basis Charter Schools Inc. traditionally have been among the top-ranked schools in the country. This year was no exception as six of the company's schools ranked in the top 50 of the U.S. News report.

From there to the rankings other Peoria high school  may seem like a steep drop based on the numbers, but the U.S. News report ranked 17,857 high schools around the U.S. based on criteria that included graduation rates, college readiness and state test scores.

Overall, most of Peoria's high schools — whether they were with Peoria Unified School District or charters — ranked in the top third of high schools around the country.

Here's a breakdown of the local schools' rank:

• Liberty High School, 9621 W. Speckled Gecko Drive, No. 75 in Arizona, No. 4,395 nationally.
• Sunrise Mountain High School, 21200 N. 83rd Ave., No. 89 in Arizona, no 5,293 nationally.
• Great Hearts Academies - Glendale Prep, 23276 N. 83rd Ave. Suite 1, No. 94 in Arizona, No. 5,604 nationally.
• Centennial High School, 14388 N. 79th Ave., No. 96 in Arizona, No. 5,834 nationally.
• Peoria High School, 11200 N. 83rd Ave., No. 155 in Arizona, No. 8,374 nationally.

Three other  charter high schools ranked in a category that lumped together those schools between No. 13,394 and No. 17,875. They were:

• Student Choice High School
• Ombudsman-Charter Northwest
• Peoria Accelerated High School

The Peoria Unified School District had other schools that ranked similar to its Peoria schools. They were:

• Ironwood High School, 6501 W. Sweetwater Ave., Glendale, No. 87 in Arizona, No. 5,174 nationally.
• Cactus High School, 6330 W. Greenway Road, Glendale, No. 104 in Arizona, No. 6,155 nationally.
• Raymond S. Kellis High School, 8990 W. Orangewood Ave., Glendale, No. 170 in Arizona, No. 9,401 nationally.

PUSD spokeswoman Danielle Airey said district officials were pleased with the rankings and they come at a time as the district is doing work on its strategic plan.

Ms. Airey said while the rankings give a high weight to AP and international baccalaureate courses, PUSD has many honors classes that were not factored into the rankings. The district, however, is looking at increasing the amount of AP classes available to students.
