Pulu powers to playoff player of the week

Posted

Cactus junior linebacker/running back Aki Pulu dominated the playoff week 1 player of the week vote like he dominated the Cobras okayoff victory over Flagstaff Coconino Nov. 27.

In the poll, a total of 395 votes were cast.

Pulu won with more than half of the total tally, receiving 243 votes.

In the 41-7 Cactus quarterfinal win over Coconino, Pulu made 12 tackles, two interceptions - including an interception return for a touchdown - on defense. Offensively he chipped in with six carries for 70 yards and two more touchdowns.

Ironwood quarterback Will Haskell placed second with 77 votes. In the Eagles' 35-30 come-from-behind 5A playoff win at Scottsdale Desert Mountain, Haskell was in on all 5 Ironwood touchdowns - running for three, catching one and throwing the game winner to Elijah Sanders in the final minute.

Haskell finished 12-23 for 299 yards and a touchdown, 25 rushing yards and three touchdowns and a 24-yard touchdown reception.

In third place was Liberty junior linebacker Gavin Dodge with 70 votes. In the Lions 25-24 open division win at Centennial, Dodge had 12 tackles and forced a fumble in final minute with a sack.

For the fifth straight year, player of the week honorees, including Pulu will win more than bragging rights.

Celebrity Tux and Tails, returns as the sponsor of the player of the Week poll. The store, at 9240 W. Northern Ave., Suite 103-A in Peoria, will provide each winner a free rental redeemable any time this school year.

The football season is over but we will have one final poll, with four performances in the final two playoff weeks. It will be available Wednesday.
