The Peoria Unified School District is celebrating seven National Merit semifinalists from four of its high schools.

Approximately 16,000 students were selected nationally to compete for 7,250 National Merit Scholarships, worth $28 million.

Less than one percent of high school seniors nationwide are chosen as semifinalists.

To be chosen as a semifinalist, high school juniors have to score exceedingly well on the Preliminary SAT/National Qualifying Test. Finalists are chosen in the spring.

This year’s National Merit semifinalists from Peoria Unified include:

Centennial High School
Ephraim Joel Esmas

Ironwood High School
Chelston Juntilla

Liberty High School
Samantha Randolph

Sunrise Mountain High School
David Salazar
Jacob Simpson
Annabelle Tran
Madilyn Williams
