With the Covid-19 pandemic lingering across the United States and Arizona, food banks are hit hard with the lack of donations.

The Lions Clubs of Arizona, an International service organization, wanted to help by providing food banks across the state with some needed assistance to maintain the food bank’s objective to feed those in need. At the last Arizona Lions Multiple District Council meeting, the council agreed to provide up to $200 to each Lions Club across the state of Arizona to give to a local food bank in early June.

Three Lions clubs joined together June 3 to provide the Valley View Community Food Bank with their donations. Peoria Sunset Lions Club matched the district donation for a total of $400, Sun City Host Lion Club added another $225 to the donation for a total of $425 and Midweek Bell Lions donated an additional $2,000 for a total of $2200. That brought the grand total of donations for these three Lions clubs to $3,025.

Other Lions clubs throughout the state provided other food banks, such as Hart Pantry, St. Mary’s Food Bank and others with their additional donations.

The Valley View Community Food Bank has been in operation, directed by Jesse Ramirez, for 32 years. There are two other locations besides Sun City — El Mirage and Surprise — where they have thrifts stores that help pay for the food bank’s operation. Their objective is to make sure people not only have the staple items but fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy products, which are also included in the food boxes given out. The Valley View Community Food Bank helps up to 380 people each day.

The Lions Clubs in Arizona continue to serve their communities through many projects like this.
