Peoria Police arrest Phoenix man for 'road rage'

Peoria Police have arrested a man on suspicion of "road rage," according to a news release.

The suspect has been identified as Rey D. Villegas, a 49-year-old Phoenix man.

Police responded to a shooting/"road rage" incident 8 a.m., Nov. 7, near 83rd and Olive avenues.

The caller reported he was driving eastbound on Olive Avenue when Villegas pulled alongside his car and started yelling at him. The suspect lifted a handgun, pointed it at the caller, and fired one round. The round struck the rear passenger door of the caller’s vehicle. The victim was not injured and was able to pull off the road and call 911.

The suspect fled the area. Officers canvassed the area but did not immediately locate the suspect, the release said.

During the investigation, detectives were able to identify the suspect vehicle. Later in the day, the Peoria SWAT team alongside detectives, arrested the suspect without incident. Villegas was booked into Maricopa County Jail on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of drive by shooting.

Police say no one was injured in this incident.

"The Peoria Police Department reminds drivers to be patient on the roadways and not engage in road rage. If you find yourself in a road rage situation, please contact your local police department and drive to a public area," the release stated.
