A man died at a hospital Thursday night after being shot by a Peoria officer who responded to kidnapping call, police said.
At about 6:45 p.m. June 5, police went to a neighborhood near West Pershing Avenue and 87th Lane after receiving information about a possible kidnapping, according to a Peoria Police Department release.
Preliminary information indicates a woman was pushing her child in a stroller while walking near a greenbelt. A man came up behind her and placed her in a bear hug. During the altercation, the suspect attempted to take the child but was unsuccessful, police said.
The woman called her husband who was nearby, and he arrived and attempted to contact the suspect in a cul-de-sac north of West Pershing Avenue and 87th Lane.
“Officers arrived on scene and contacted the male subject. The subject failed to comply with officer commands, which resulted in an officer-involved shooting. The officer fired at least one round at the subject, striking him,” the release stated.
Other officers arrived to take the suspect into custody. He was taken to a hospital where he died. The suspect has been identified as Matthew Paul Cardon, 43, of Peoria.
The officer involved was also taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
An investigation is underway with the Glendale Police Department taking the lead as part of the West Valley Investigative Response Team, which is standard protocol for incidents involving officer use of force.
Investigators have gathered evidence to show Cardon had mental health issues. Police say there is no relationship of any kind between Cardon and the original victim of this incident.
