City celebrates Thank a Water Hero Day, Sept. 23

The City of Peoria will be joining several other Arizona cities in for Thank a Water Hero Day on Sept. 23 to salute the heroic service water workers provide.

During a time when millions of Americans were under a stay-at-home order for the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of water employees in Arizona continued to leave their homes to carry out the essential work that communities cannot live without.

“Every day we are afforded the luxury of taking for granted our most precious resource — water,” said Mayor Cathy Carlat. “Peoria’s water heroes are on the job making sure we have reliable delivery of the highest quality water services. Their contributions are of vital importance to the health, safety, and well-being of our community and I am grateful for their dedicated service to Peoria families.”

This is the inaugural event in which Thank a Water Hero Day will celebrate and honor essential water workers across the state who provide the most valuable asset to desert dwellers — water. This statewide event is intended to build public awareness about the hard work done by the employees of water and wastewater services, reminding residents about the benefits of clean, reliable and affordable water services.

In a typical year, water services in the city of Peoria delivers approximately 10 billion gallons of potable water to customers and treats approximately four billion gallons of wastewater. Providing this essential public service requires a dedicated team of scientists, chemists, plant operators, testers, inspectors, water and sewer system operators, support staff, technicians, engineers and managers, all working with a common purpose.

Across the state, thousands of dedicated water heroes, utilizing the latest technology and anticipating the needs of the future, work every day to provide services that assure Arizona communities a high quality of life.

“I am thrilled to be able to work with the devoted group of professionals that make up Peoria Water Services. Even with the current difficulties we are all facing, this crew understands the importance of their work to the livability of our city,” said Cape Powers, Peoria’s Water Services director. “Most people, I am sure, are completely unaware of the efforts required in these challenging times. From my unique perspective, however, I have seen our employees take on and push through the challenges. Thank you, water heroes.”
