The City of Peoria celebrated 35 young artists from the Peoria Unified School District spanning kindergarten to eighth grade who participated in the eighth exhibition of the Mayor and Council’s Young Artists Program.

This ongoing program engages Peoria students interested in the arts, while bringing attention to the value that art brings to a community. The exhibition was on display in Peoria City Hall from Oct. 24 through Jan. 7.

“The City of Peoria is home to incredibly talented youth and it’s an honor to show off their artistic creations at city hall,” Mayor Cathy Carlat stated. “Art is truly the heart and soul of a community. By recognizing the creativity of our kids, we strengthen the powerful impact that comes from incorporating the arts into our lives.”

Through a diverse and vibrant collection of public art, theatre and festival offerings, and the City Hall Art Gallery – managed by the West Valley Art Museum (WVAM) – Peoria takes pride in fostering an arts culture that creates a sense of place for residents and visitors to experience art in an accessible way.

The WVAM has selected a special art piece to display in its gallery. Connie McMillin, WVAM Board of Trustees secretary/treasurer, has awarded Payton Sampson, eighth grader at Desert Harbor Elementary School, 15585 N. 91st Ave., Peoria, with this honor. Payton’s artwork will be on display until March near the City Hall Art Gallery, 8401 W. Monroe St., Peoria.

The gallery is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and noon-6 p.m. Thursdays. Visit wvam.org or call 623-972-0635.
