Peoria, bank, school district partner for internship program

BNC Bank, city of Peoria, and Peoria Unified School District combined their efforts to offer a summer internship program for a business-minded student at Liberty High School.

David Tracy, senior vice president of business banking, said the company selected student Madeline Reeves out of a number of other very talented and deserving students.

The purpose of the program is to develop local workforce talent while offering the student an opportunity to add real world business experience to her academic studies.

“It was a great opportunity to support our community and an outstanding student while working toward our mutual goals of helping to develop a talented and experienced local workforce in Peoria,” Tracy said. “It’s a great example of a public-private partnership and BNC has benefited from Madeline’s enthusiasm, work ethic, and community spirit.”

The summer intern program was developed by Barbara Coakley, CTE director at Peoria Unified School District, and Kirstin Hall, business attraction program manager with city of Peoria Economic Development.

“Internships bring talent and businesses together and help both parties. Workforce development is an important part of economic development. I am impressed that BNC Bank worked so quickly to bring Maddie Reeves on board to gain professional experience at their bank this summer,” Hall said. “Growing our own talent in the West Valley will strengthen our workforce talent pool. This is an unforgettable experience she’ll take with her into her own career.”

Coakley added the partnership with BNC Bank and Peoria CTE is an example of how business and public education can partner to produce personalized learning experiences that educate the workforce of tomorrow.

“We are thankful to businesses like BNC Bank that are willing to collaborate and provide valuable work-based experiences for our students,” Coakley said.

Liberty business teacher JoDee Pennock recommended Reeves, who said that working as an intern at BNC Bank gave her a glimpse of what it’s like to be part of the workforce in an environment beyond a typical summer job.

“It provided me with confidence and extended knowledge for after graduation as I plan on pursuing a career in this field,” she said.
