The Peoria Unified School District held their annual district spelling bee, Jan. 29, where top spellers from across the district competed in front of their peers.

To protect the health of Peoria Unified students and staff, the spelling bee was conducted remotely and is available to watch on the district’s YouTube channel at https://bit.ly/39hyIQH.

The winner of this year’s annual district spelling bee is Joash Esmas from Oasis Elementary School. Joash won in the eleventh round with the word “anthropology.”

The eight runners-up include:
•Cedric Fidel from Sunset Heights Elementary School
•Anthony Priego from Copperwood Elementary School
•Logan Bennett from Marshall Ranch Elementary School

•Magnus Brown from Peoria Traditional School
•Robert Johnson from Country Meadows Elementary School
•Christine Koenig from Foothills Fine Arts Academy
•Benjamin Snow from Canyon Elementary School
•Braedyn Matthews from Heritage Elementary School

These nine students will compete in the Maricopa County Region IV Spelling Bee hosted by Peoria Unified in February.

The winners of the regional bee will move on to the state-level Arizona Spelling Bee in March followed by the Scripps National Spelling Bee held in Washington, D.C. this summer.
