Northbound Loop 303 closed this weekend in Peoria

ADOT’s project team setting stage for shift to new traffic lanes

Posted

Sections of northbound Loop 303 between El Mirage Road and Lone Mountain Parkway in north Peoria will be closed this weekend, Aug. 27-30, as the Arizona Department of Transportation sets the stage for shifting traffic onto newly constructed travel lanes.

The new lanes are part of ADOT’s ongoing $20.3 million project to widen Loop 303 to three lanes in each direction between Happy Valley and Lake Pleasant parkways.

Northbound Loop 303 will be closed overnight between El Mirage Road and Lone Mountain Parkway from 8 p.m. Friday Aug. 27 to 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28. Traffic will detour south on El Mirage Road, east on Bell Road and north on 99th Avenue and Lake Pleasant Parkway to reach Loop 303 beyond the closure. Drivers on northbound Loop 303 may also exit to eastbound Bell Road and use the northbound 99th Avenue/Lake Pleasant Parkway detour.

Northbound Loop 303 is then scheduled to be closed between Happy Valley and Lone Mountain parkways from 7 a.m. Saturday Aug. 28 to 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30. Traffic will detour east on Happy Valley Parkway and north on Lake Pleasant Parkway to travel beyond the closure. Hours are subject to change depending on progress made during the weekend construction work.

Drivers in the Vistancia community also should note that northbound Loop 303 is scheduled to be narrowed to one lane between Lone Mountain and Lake Pleasant parkways from 8 p.m. Friday Aug. 27 to 4 a.m. Monday Aug. 30. Motorists entering northbound Loop 303 at Lone Mountain Parkway should be prepared to slow down and pay attention in the work zone.

ADOT’s Loop 303 widening project, which started in December 2020, will improve capacity for current and future traffic needs by adding a third lane in each direction along the freeway between Happy Valley and Lake Pleasant parkways. Completion is scheduled for early 2022.

New freeway bridges have been built over the Beardsley Canal and the future Jomax Parkway interchange, allowing crews to start switching Loop 303 traffic from temporary travel lanes to new, permanent lanes north of Happy Valley Parkway over the next several weeks.

The Loop 303 project is funded as part of the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Regional Transportation Plan. Projects in the plan are funded in part by Proposition 400, a dedicated sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.
