More than 1,000 vaccinated at Peoria Unified COVID site

7,000 meals also given away

More than 1,000 people were vaccinated last weekend at Peoria Unified’s closed point of dispensary and more than 7,000 free meals were served by the district’s Food & Nutrition Department, Feb. 20-21.

The district partnered with Fry’s Food Stores and Maricopa County Department of Public Health, to host the event at Liberty High School, 9621 W. Speckled Gecko Drive, for Peoria Unified staff and other educators and child care workers in the community.

Superintendent Jason Reynolds said partnering with MCDPH and Fry’s to provide district staff and educators in the community with their vaccine is an important mitigation effort in response to COVID-19.

“Peoria Unified was proud to serve as the host site and make the vaccine more widely available to eligible individuals in the northwest Valley. Our hope is that the time, energy and effort put into supporting this closed POD will make our schools a safer place for the students, teachers and staff in our community to continue to work and learn.”

The closed POD was for the first dose of the Moderna vaccine and was available to educators and education staff who qualified.

Another event for the second dose will be held in March.

In addition to the vaccine, those with children in the car or at home were  offered free meals thanks to USDA and Peoria Unified’s Food & Nutrition team.

“Throughout the pandemic, Fry’s Pharmacy’s priority has been the safety of our customers, associates and communities,” said Stephanie Spark, Pharmacy/Health & Wellness Director at Fry’s Food Stores. “It’s meaningful and uplifting to us to be the immunization partner for Peoria Unified School District, whose teachers and child-care providers teach many of our associate’s children as well as many others in the community.”
