Local nonprofit collaborates with Peoria to shed light on victims of teen dating violence

Posted

For the month of February, local nonprofit BLOOM365 will be host its Silent Witness Initiative in Peoria.

This initiative aims to shed light on victims of teen dating violence and share their stories during National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month.

The exhibit, a partnership between The Home Depot, the city of Peoria and Accel Metro Campus, will include life-size silhouettes, each representing a person who once lived, had neighbors, friends and family whose life ended violently at the hands of an individual perpetrating domestic/sexual/teen dating violence.

These figures will have plaques sharing their stories and include resources available to young people experiencing interpersonal violence. This exhibit will raise community awareness and honor the lives of Arizonans lost to dating violence.

These silhouettes will be available in two different locations for viewers. The first will be Centennial Plaza Park, where the exhibit will be Feb. 25-27. The second location will be determined, and will be available Feb. 22-24. The hours for both exhibits will be noon-6 p.m.

“The city of Peoria has always been super supportive of BLOOM365, taking the opportunity to listen to teen led organizations,” said Saanvi Tiwary, a regional director for BLOOM365 and BASIS Peoria High School student.

Earlier this month,  Peoria City Council proclaimed February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. On Feb. 2, Mayor Cathy Carlat read the proclamation for the month, as well as encouraged citizens to “go orange” to raise awareness as they lit the city council building with orange lights for the week.

BLOOM365 continues their outreach for Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month through events like the Silent Witness Initiative and social media campaigns throughout the month of February.
