‘La Cage aux Folles’ to open Peoria run

ABT hosts classic musical comedy

“La Cage aux Folles” opens its run in Peoria 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 at Arizona Broadway Theatre, 7701 W. Paradise Lane.

The production plays through Feb. 28.

“Jean-Michel and Anne are newly engaged, and now her straight-laced parents want to meet his. The only problem? His birth-mother is out of the picture, his dad owns a drag nightclub, and his mom is the star of the show,” the theatre states in a news release. “Jean-Michel wants just one night with his parents playing it ‘straight’ to impress Anne’s parents. What’s a Drag Queen to do?”

With music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein, “La Cage aux Folles” is based on the 1973 French play of the same name by Jean Poiret. It opened on Broadway in 1983.

In 1996, the hit film “The Birdcage,” starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, was a remake of the 1978 Franco-Italian film “La Cage aux Folles.”
