Ira A. Murphy Elementary School, located in the Peoria Unified School District, received the “Because It Take a Village Award” from School Connect.
The school was recognized for cultivating a robust network of community partners that support its students and staff in various ways. These partners include local businesses, nonprofits and educational organizations.
As a “Because It Takes a Village Award," recipient, Ira A. Murphy Elementary School has created a support system that addresses the needs of Ira A. Murphy students and their families so they can focus on their academics.
Will Elet from The Laughton Team donated 50 backpacks filled with school supplies, while Alta Loma Clothing Closet and Zuri’s Circle provided sweatshirts and jackets for the school’s Community Closet. The Reunion Church donated 200 pairs of socks, and the Inspire Project, along with the Peoria Sunset Lions, invited families to special events.
Other notable partners include the American Legion, Peoria Police Department, Sun City Elks, and several local high schools that have contributed food, clothing, and holiday gifts. Their leadership has resulted in measurable improvements in student outcomes and community engagement. Progress is tracked through standardized test scores, formative assessments, and surveys.
Community and family engagement plays a crucial role in this process. Parents participate in tutoring, parent-teacher conferences, and progress meetings. Instructional rounds, professional development, and evaluations are tools available to support teachers.
