Facebook Live session to focus on veteran suicide prevention

Operation Deep Dive looking for study participants in 15 states

Posted

In their continuing efforts to prevent suicide and non-natural causes of death among former service members, America’s Warrior Partnership and the Southwest Valley-based Reveille Foundation will host a joint Facebook Live event Wednesday, Feb. 17, to discuss how people can get involved in Operation Deep Dive, a community-based suicide prevention study.

The event will begin a noon Arizona time (2 p.m. Eastern time) at https://fb.me/e/1PNooIR6Z.

The four-year study being conducted in 15 states, including Arizona, is a partnership between America’s Warrior Partnership and researchers from the University of Alabama with support from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation.

“One of Operation Deep Dive’s goals is to identify the unique community-level factors that affected a former service member before their death,” Cheree Tham, vice president of Programs and Initiatives for AWP, said. “Researchers are gathering insights for this analysis by conducting interviews with the friends and loved ones of former service members who were lost to suicide or a non-natural cause of death. We invite the public to attend the Facebook Live event so they can learn how they can get involved in their community.”

The Reveille Foundation, an affiliate partner with The Network at AWP, is co-hosting the Facebook Live event to raise awareness and encourage under-served communities to get involved in OpDD.

“The Reveille Foundation is extremely proud to be the community affiliate for Operation Deep Dive in the state of Arizona,” Reveille Foundation President and CEO Steve Yamamori, said in a prepared statement.

“The veteran community here is vast, with more than 600,000 in Arizona, which includes more than 300,000 in Maricopa County alone,” the Southwest Valley resident stated. “Sadly, the most recent studies also indicate that veterans are also twice as likely to die by suicide than non-veterans in Arizona. We are hopeful that the work done by Operation Deep Dive will help all veteran service organizations collaborate to find ways to better serve our veterans, long before they are contemplating suicide.”

 Participate in the study

 Operation Deep Dive is seeking participants to interview for the study. Questions will focus on how the participant’s friend or loved one interacted with their community before their death. To be eligible for an interview, participants must:

  • Be 18 years old or older;
  • Have a relative, loved one, friend or co-worker who was a veteran that died by suicide or a non-natural cause of death within the last 24 months; and
  • Have lived in the same community as the veteran at the time of their death.

The study is being conducted in the following states where OpDD is active: Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas.
