Counting down to spring training in Peoria

New season kicks off Feb. 22

Spring Training Season 27 kicks off when the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners face off on 1:10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Peoria Sports Complex, 16101 N. 83rd Ave.

The season opener is an annual charity game that celebrates the fundraising success for various local charities through the Peoria Diamond Club.

The season starts with early popular matchups of the Mariners and Chicago Cubs Monday, Feb. 24, and the Padres and Cubs Friday, Feb. 28. Five of the season’s eight night games, a decrease from last year, will be on Fridays. The stadium will be open early at 4:30 p.m. every Friday for the new Happy Hour that includes drink specials ahead of game time. Back this year are Dog Days, Kids Days, Little League Day, Education Night and Book it to the Ballpark.

“The Peoria Sports Complex is the place to be on Fridays during spring training with every Friday slated for a 6:40 p.m. night game,” Peoria Sports Complex superintendent Mike Hyland stated in a news release. “Start your weekend off right with a game and happy hour. Gates open early at 4:30 p.m. and, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., enjoy drink specials including $5 draft beers and entertainment at the left field Four Peaks Pavilion.”

New menu items will debut as well.

“We are bringing a street taco cart to the stadium, adding a spicy twist to our Ruthian Foot-Long hot dog wrapped with jalapeno bacon and introducing the Mac Attack hot dog, family-sized Nacho and French Fry Helmets with your choice of a Padres or Mariners helmet to take home as a souvenir,” Mr. Hyland said. “Another souvenir concept for 2020 is a 32-ounce cup, good for $2 soda fountain refills all season long after the initial cup purchase.”

Pitchers and catchers from both teams report for spring training in Peoria by Tuesday, Feb. 11 and position players by Feb. 16 for the Padres and Feb. 17 for the Mariners. First full squad workouts begin the day after position players report.

Fans are welcome to watch player workouts at the practice fields starting Thursday, Feb. 13
