The Peoria City Council will return from winter break with a full agenda of items on their first public meeting of the new year, 7 p.m., Jan. 7, in the council chambers, 8401 W. Monroe Street.
New business will include possible approval of a budget amendment authorizing the appropriation of $200,000 from the General Fund Contingency account to the Sports Complex Operations account for funds to complete the replacement of failing carpet in the San Diego Padres Clubhouse at the Peoria Sports Complex, 16101 N. 83rd Ave.
The clubhouse carpet has experienced ongoing failure, with the carpet delaminating from the floor, especially in high-traffic areas. This has created a safety hazard and is in need of repair, according to a city document.
On an annual basis at the beginning of the year, the city council appoints a vice mayor and mayor pro tem from among their ranks. This is also scheduled for the first meeting.
Another key agenda item includes an update on Peoria’s homeless outreach strategies, including discussion of the Jan. 28 MAG Point-in-Time Count, a one-night snapshot of homelessness in the region to learn more about the individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County.
Mayor Cathy Carlat said homelessness is an important issue impacting communities across America.
“Although Peoria’s homeless counts are significantly lower than what we see across the nation and across our state, we have a plan in place to address this need and provide support, resources, and enforcement, as appropriate,” she said.
Lastly, the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019 will be presented to the council. The CAFR gives the public a comprehensive record of what the city spent and includes more detailed financial reports than the annual budget.
