May is Building Safety Month

Posted

This May, residents are encouraged to check their homes and create a plan to protect their home and family from natural hazards.

Take part in Building Safety Month and enter to win prizes to make your homes safer.

Here are some tips to stay safe.

Fire Safety
· Develop and practice a fire escape plan with your family. Keep hallways, windows, and doors clear of obstructions.
· Install smoke alarms on every level, outside every bedroom. Test alarms regularly and replace batteries annually.

Electrical Safety
· Never overload electrical cords or power strips. Don’t use appliances and electronics with damaged cords.

Pool Safety
· Install fences around your pool with self-closing and self-latching gates.

Fire Prevention Outdoors
· Create a perimeter around your house free of trees, leaves, branches, and debris that can burn.

Emergency Preparedness
· Establish a safety destination (like a friend’s or relative’s home) and practice several routes to get there in case of roadblocks or hazards.

Disaster Readiness

· Prepare an emergency kit with food, water, first aid kit, copies of important documents, and basic supplies. Store it in a sturdy, closed container that’s easily accessible. Restock items twice a year.

Hazard Mitigation
· Take steps before storm season to strengthen your home against natural disasters. Simple improvements can reduce the impact of floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires.

Utility Safety
· Teach every family member how and when to turn off gas, water, and electricity if evacuation becomes necessary.
