Binsbacher: Happy Valley Road construction shifts from day to night

For most living in the Mesquite District, Happy Valley Road is the main corridor we use to access our neighborhoods, shopping centers, parks, schools and more.

The current work being performed on the road is frustrating, especially for those like myself who drive this stretch every single day.

However, I guarantee the end result will be worth the headaches. Recently, a few specific concerns were brought to my attention and subsequently addressed by the city.

It quickly became apparent that daytime road restrictions were not feasible given the varied schedules of traffic. City staff has been working closely with contractors to figure out a solution and a balance between traffic needs and contractor safety. Recently, the contractor has agreed to begin working nights as often as possible. There will still be a need for periodic daytime closures for asphalt patching and other items when necessary, but moving forward a majority of the work will be completed at night, alleviating the backups caused by daytime restrictions.

Additionally, it was brought to my attention that excessive speeding is occurring throughout the construction zone. I recently had a discussion with the police commander regarding this topic. His team of officers is aware of the situation and have been balancing enforcement of the area with calls for service. The city’s traffic services unit will work on a specific plan for the area and continue to monitor the roadway.
