Since many people will be celebrating this week with fireworks, the city of Peoria wants to ensure everyone's safety by sharing state and local laws regarding fireworks.

Public safety officials remind residents to adhere to all laws and be safe on the Independence Day weekend, as well as keep pets safe.

The following is law regarding fireworks in Arizona.

• Fireworks are allowed in Arizona from May 20 to July 6.

• Consumer fireworks may be used on private property, such as a backyard or driveway. Fireworks cannot be used on city property, including parks, city streets and city sidewalks. They also cannot be used on state land or on school property, unless a permit has been issued.

• Aerial fireworks are prohibited in Arizona including: sky rockets, bottle rockets, Roman candles, reloadable shell devices, aerials, and single tube type devices, unless the device is part of a permitted public fireworks display.

• The penalty for violating any prohibited fireworks is a maximum fine of $750.

Fireworks and Pets

This week brings a lot of joy, but it can be scary for pets and others throughout the neighborhood. The American Veterinary Medical Association highlights these important tips, among many others.

• Secure pets safely indoors, especially if you plan to leave for the night.

• Ensure all fences and gates are locked and secured - and guests do the same.

• Humans can handle excessive sun and food, pets cannot.

• Celebrations may take place throughout the week or weekend, not just on July 4.

• Visit avma.org for more information.

Also, please be mindful as you celebrate in your neighborhoods, as there are also those with PTSD who may be anxious during the festivities.
