The Peoria and Glendale police departments have partnered to create a charity softball tournament involving police officers and firefighters throughout the state.

All proceeds raised will be given to Special Olympics Arizona and Law Enforcement Torch Run Arizona.

This one-day event, a double elimination softball tournament, will start with opening ceremonies 8:45 am., Jan. 18, at Paloma Park, 29799 N. Lake Pleasant Parkway.

Police and fire send a special thank you to Peoria Parks and Recreation for providing the venue.

The ceremonies will include a presentation of colors by the Peoria Police Department Honor Guard and several Special Olympic athletes will throw out the first pitch to kick-start the tournament.

This event is free to the public and will feature a home run derby during the tournament.

Several local departments will be participating in this cause: Peoria Police and Fire (3 teams), Glendale Police and Fire, Buckeye Police (2 teams) Scottsdale Police, El Mirage Police, Phoenix Police (2 teams), Surprise Police and Fire, Avondale Police, Yavapai County First Responders, and Special Olympics AZ.
