I do not understand Mr. Nelson's inability to understand retirees’ support for President Trump (Opinion, April 24, 2025).
It is obvious that retirees are concerned for their country and the mess we are leaving to our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. We need to reclaim our country and all of its greatness. We need to provide opportunities and stability for our fellow Americans to grow and prosper and live the American dream. We may have difficulties to overcome, but no one is trying to leave America.
Like most Americans, we are in a hurry to see results. Tariffs may not be the answer, but we need to try. I think they will be beneficial in the long run. We need to be patient and give this approach time to make a difference and to work through our trade networks. I don't understand why all of our trade partners get to charge tariffs on American goods, and we do not charge tariffs on goods being brought into the U.S.
The short answer to Mr. Nelson is: These retired Americans are more concerned with the future of our country than their own personal finances.
