Wainwright: Americans must remain optimistic in distressing times

Posted

This has been a dark and depressing past few weeks for our country and community.

Americans are repeatedly being shown a handcuffed man being suffocated before our eyes, riots which resulted in the beating and death of an elderly retired police chief, vandalism of national memorials and the burning of a church in Washington D.C.

All this in the midst of an ongoing and seemingly endless global pandemic.

We as a people have overcome what appeared to be hopeless odds in the past and with optimism and determination, we can come through this difficult chapter in our history and emerge even stronger.

I have long been inspired by a member of our family, who overcame a humiliating military defeat and physical abuse by his captors. It is my hope his story can inspire others during this time.

General Wainwright emerged a patriot with compassion toward his captors and gratitude to his fellow citizens who greeted his return from prison camp with love and appreciation.

I hope the three photos help to inspire and show how Americans can prevail when faced with the most difficult of times.

Editor’s Note: Jonathan Wainwright is a candidate for the Paradise Valley Town Council in the Aug. 4 primary election.
