Trustees of the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust recently awarded $1 million to Notre Dame Preparatory as part of the largest single-day grant initiative in Arizona’s history.
Part of $123 million in surprise grants to 71 Arizona nonprofits, the grants were presented to awardees throughout the day on Sept. 13, as a surprise, according to a press release.
Trustees met with the CEOs and/or board chairs of the 71 organizations to thank them for their leadership, work and to provide capital through grants to help with initiatives.
NDP president Jill Platt was present to receive the grant on behalf of Notre Dame Prep. The funds will be dedicated to the school’s tuition assistance program and scholarships, the release said.
“We are so grateful to the trustees for their incredibly generous donation,” said NDP President Platt in a release. “This blessing will help us fulfill the mission of the Catholic Church and expand our ability to serve more students in the Diocese of Phoenix. It’s a very pleasant surprise.”
Despite a tumultuous year from the global health crisis, caused by COVID-19, Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust’s endowment grew by $123 million in the 15 months following the start of the pandemic.
As stewards of the Trust’s founder, Virginia Galvin Piper, the release said trustees wanted to share with the community all of the earnings through the Now is the Moment Grants Commemoration.
“I think the trustees understood that if Virginia Piper were alive, she would have seen the needs; she would have seen the good fortune that the investments have made; and she would have said, ‘The time is now,’” said Trustee Judy Jolley Mohraz about the grants.
“The Now is the Moment Grants will generate a ripple effect of goodness throughout our community and Valley,” Platt said. “We will be able to grant aid to qualified and deserving students making a Catholic college-prep education at Notre Dame Preparatory possible, regardless of financial status.”
More than 73% of all Notre Dame Prep students receive some sort of financial assistance totaling $3.6 million in aid.
“The impact this grant will have on our students and families will be incredible. I’m immensely thankful,” Platt added.
Notre Dame Prep, 9701 E. Bell Road in Scottsdale, is a Catholic diocesan college preparatory high school with a co-ed enrollment of 875 students. The school has received national recognition for the caliber of its academic, arts and athletic programs.
