UMOM New Day Center, Maricopa County offers meals for homeless

Posted

Helpings Café, a UMOM New Day Centers subsidiary, has partnered with a Maricopa County shelter to support the homeless community with meals.

The organizations provide 1,520 meals per week to the county shelter in addition to the existing 6,000 meals prepared for UMOM clients, according to a press release.

Meal items include freshly baked muffins, house-made granola, fruit salad, sandwiches, salads, and hot meals such as enchiladas, curry chicken, pork stew, rice and seasonal vegetables.

“All of us at UMOM New Day Centers are committed to our mission of ending homelessness,” said UMOM Director of Culinary Enterprises Dina Altieri in a prepared statement.

“Our kitchen team is honored to collaborate with community partners to provide food for the most vulnerable in Maricopa County.”

UMOM New Day Centers is noted as “Arizona’s innovative leader in shelter, supportive services, and housing for families, single women, and youth experiencing homelessness,” the release said.

Helpings Café --- UMOM’s social enterprise using its profits to fund programs and supportive services for those experiencing homelessness --- began providing meals to about 80 individuals temporarily housed in downtown Phoenix to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in mid-May.

Helpings Café delivers nutritious, pre-packaged meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on weekdays; and brunch and dinner on weekends,  the release said, detailing the collaboration between Maricopa County and Helpings Café.
