Teacher recognized for saving student’s life
Posted
Paradise Valley Mayor Jerry Bien-Willner has proclaimed Feb. 9, 2023 as Alexandria Hawley Day, following the teacher’s heroic actions.
Hawley has been a teacher for third and fifth grades at Kiva Elementary School since 2019.
According to the proclamation, a student ran up choking and struggling for breath during Hawley’s normal class teachings on Jan. 31. Hawley quickly recognized the severity of the situation and immediately sprang into action by asking students to get another teacher to assist. She executed the life-saving Heimlich maneuver on the student, effectively dislodging the blockage and saving the student’s life.
“Ms. Hawley showed extraordinary poise and composure under stressful circumstances,” the proclamation stated. “Paradise Valley Town Council applauds the heroic actions of this model teacher, Ms. Alexandria Hawley and follow up by Nurse Kelley Eckhauser.”
Mayor Bien-Willner and the town highlighted the importance of learning and using these essential safety measures by recognizing Hawley on Feb. 9.
