'Runway for Research' kicks off agenda to benefit cancer survivors

The third annual Runway for Research, a fashion show and fundraising event supporting women’s cancer research at the Translational Genomics Research Institute, part of City of Hope, is set for 8:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Neiman Marcus, Scottsdale Fashion Square.
Event plans were outlined by Runway for Research committee co-chairs Beth McRae and Justine Hurry at Neiman Marcus on March 2 when the committee held its kick-off for the coming year-long agenda of planning and fundraising.
Runway for Research, according to a press release, is a fun way to bring the community together to celebrate women’s cancer survivors, and support TGen’s pioneering DNA-based research, which uses the power of the human genome to provide hope and answers for cancer patients.
This year, the event color is pink in accordance with being held in October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the kick-off meeting, committee members wore all shades of gorgeous pink. The TGen event, in partnership with Neiman Marcus and Scottsdale Fashion Square, features dozens of models showcasing the latest fall fashions, culinary delights, and a luxury raffle. Presenting sponsor is Betty McRae, The McRae Family.
The inaugural Runway for Research was held in 2020 before going on hiatus because of the COVID pandemic. Last year’s event was a sell-out and raised over $230,000 for TGen’s women’s cancer research. Expectations are high for this year to exceed last year’s success and raise more needed funds, the release said.
Nearly 307,000 American women will be told they have breast or ovarian cancer this year, noted the release.
Physicians rely on TGen to help provide new methods of early detection, diagnosing cancer at its earliest stages when treatment can be most effective, and provide targeted new drug treatments with fewer side effects. Precision medicine – treatment based on each’s patient’s unique genetic make-up – is described as "the heart of TGen’s women’s cancer research program."
