Responding to Jay Ross’ opinion on mass transit in Paradise Valley

Posted

Jay Ross makes assumptions about why people drive instead of taking the bus. How would he know what trips are not essential or why there's a solo driver as he rides his bike through Phoenix and Paradise Valley?

Mass transit ridership has declined for over a decade. Multiple factors contribute to this including ride hailing. The biggest factor, why he should not expect Town of Paradise Valley to lobby for additional bus routes on Lincoln Drive, is the low density of the municipality. And lobbying for a bus route expansion through Phoenix to Paradise Valley is outside the mission of the town.

Mass transit ridership is higher in areas of dense population such as New York City. Paradise Valley is low density, about one-quarter of Phoenix's density. New York City density is 10 times what Phoenix has. Do the math.

Also, remember that every time you buy something in Maricopa County, Prop 488 collects half a percent sales tax to fund public transit. We all support mass transit whether we ride or not.
