Phoenix Country Day graduate heads to College Student Congress

Evan Pittman, a Brown University junior from Phoenix and Phoenix Country Day School graduate, will be the State of Arizona representative to the 2020 College Student Congress this summer.

The program will be at the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship in Lexington, Kentucky, and Washington, D.C. Mr. Pittman will join 50 other rising college seniors participating in the College Student Congress program, according to a press release.

The Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship --- a non-profit dedicated to educating a new generation of leaders in the skills of cooperation, negotiation, civil discourse, and compromise --- will host its annual two-week academic program.

The goal of the program is to allow participating students an opportunity to learn about the principles of statesmanship in the tradition of former Kentucky statesmen and U.S. Speaker of the House Henry Clay.

During the College Student Congress, students will meet with academics, elected officials, area experts and civic leaders to discuss the practical importance of compromise and cooperation to resolve conflict and develop policy solutions for today’s most pressing issues.

Through an immersive policy project, participants will work in groups to draft bipartisan policy memos on criminal justice reform, healthcare, energy and the environment and U.S.-China relations, a release states.

Selected students will attend the College Student Congress from May 11-22, one representing each state and Washington, D.C., a release states.

“The Henry Clay Center is dedicated to equipping students to become well-rounded, effective public service leaders,” Clare Magee, executive director, said in a prepared statement

“Participants in this year’s College Student Congress represent a diverse and talented cross-section of our nation’s young leaders. We are certain that each of these students will bring a unique perspective to the program and challenge their peers to engage with policy on a more personal level.”

A 2017 graduate of Phoenix Country Day School, Mr. Pittman was also selected as the City of Phoenix Outstanding Young Man of the Year in 2017. He is double-majoring in business and education at Brown University.

Mr. Pittman worked as an intern in the CEO’s Office at AT&T headquarters in Dallas during Summer 2019, was a Ronald Reagan Fellow at Goldwater Institute during his college 2020 Winter Session, and will spend Summer 2020 in New York City in an investment banking internship.

Since its founding in 2007, the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship has produced nearly 800 graduates from both its High School and College Student Congress programs.

The 2020 High School Student Congress will take place June 8-13 in Lexington, Kentucky. Applications for the high school program are available online through Feb. 17.
