Phoenix Chorale, MusicaNova Orchestra team up for Paradise Valley concerts

‘Tales of Love and Majesty’ coming in March

Posted

Two Arizona musical ensembles, the Grammy-winning Phoenix Chorale and the MusicaNova Orchestra, join forces for an upcoming concert.

“Tales of Love and Majesty” brings this choral-orchestral collaboration to celebrate pomp, grandeur, and storytelling through legendary baroque-style pieces. The first concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8 followed by a 3 p.m. show Sunday, March 9 at Camelback Bible Church, 3900 E. Stanford Drive, in Paradise Valley.

The concert will feature Handel’s “Coronation Anthems” and “Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne.” These masterpieces were composed to celebrate royal splendor and are filled with majestic harmonies and soaring melodies that evoke the pageantry of 18th-century Britain.

British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor considered “A Tale of Old Japan,” written at the end of his too-short life, to be his finest work, according to a Phoenix Chorale press release. Like his popular “Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast,” it is characterized by melodic lines with echoes of Dvorak and Elgar.

This will be the first American performance since its 1912 premiere and the first time it’s been professionally recorded.

The Phoenix Chorale and MusicaNova Orchestra unite under the dual leadership of conductors Christopher Gabbitas and Warren Cohen.

Tickets are $45 for adults, $39 for seniors and military members, and $20 for children under 16.
