Paradise Valley resident Darryl Berger may have found himself the shortest commute to work with his newest purchase, which happens to be across the street from his home.

On Nov. 1, Gurney’s Resorts announced BB Hotels, co-owned by Berger, has acquired Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa in Paradise Valley.
Berger is a neighbor of the resort.

Scottsdale-based real estate investment company BB Hotels, formerly Berger Holdings, has partnered with New York-based Metrovest Equities and BLDG MGMT to purchase the iconic resort in Paradise Valley.

The transaction is expected to close in early November, according to a press release. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Robert H. Castellini has owned Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa since 1992 and was responsible in concert with Westroc Hospitality for transforming Sanctuary into one of the most highly acclaimed and award-winning resorts in the Southwest.

Under new ownership, the property will remain fully operational as Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, a Gurney’s Resort & Spa and Michael Surguine, general manager, will continue in his role to oversee the resort that both guests and locals have enjoyed for over 20 years.

“Our success was possible due to our phenomenal team. It has been an honor and privilege for my family to serve as stewards of this incredible Paradise Valley landmark,” said Castellini. “We believe that Gurney’s Resorts fully appreciates this great honor and understands the importance of Sanctuary’s history and charm to Paradise Valley and to all our loyal patrons.”

Together, Gurney’s Resorts and Berger Holdings are currently reviewing all aspects of the resort in anticipation of a comprehensive renovation and property-wide refurbishments beginning in summer 2022, the press release stated. Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, a Gurney’s Resort & Spa will remain open throughout the transition and renovation.

“The Sanctuary is a treasure in our community,” said BB Hotels co-founder and Paradise Valley resident Darryl Berger. “Arizonans, and folks from around the world, love this resort. My partners and I are thrilled to be the Sanctuary’s next stewards and we thank Mr. Castellini and the Westroc team for entrusting us with this honor.”

The acquisition marks a milestone westward expansion for the independent hospitality brand whose current portfolio includes the fabled Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa in Montauk, New York.

“Gurney’s Resorts is honored to partner with such a beloved property, and we are thrilled to bring our signature hospitality to the Sanctuary while maintaining the resort’s local character,” said Gurney’s Resort owner George Filopoulos. “Gurney’s Resorts are known for their inspiring locations, unparalleled access and best in class amenities and the Sanctuary effortlessly features these attributes in a refined yet relaxed setting.”

Nestled within the picturesque landscapes of Camelback Mountain, the Sanctuary is a famed Paradise Valley luxury resort set upon 53 acres of lush desert featuring manicured grounds, gardens, pools and award-winning facilities.

The property’s current offerings include a 12,000-square-foot spa, fitness center, hiking trails, swimming pools, tennis courts and 112 casitas and suites with views of the area’s natural vistas. With an exceptional culinary team led by Food Network star and Executive Chef Beau MacMillan, the Sanctuary’s dining offerings focus on creative seasonal menus that feature fresh, local ingredients procured from a network of artisans and organic farmers.

The resort has 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space, including a 250-capacity ballroom, perfect for small to large scale meetings and events.

The property currently offers thoughtful amenities and services aimed at creating a seamless and relaxing guest experience.
