Our differing opinions are part of the governing process in Paradise Valley

Posted

As your mayor, I want to share a few thoughts about the town council — specifically how we work together, communicate and manage differences of opinion.

Like any organization, we are not always in complete agreement. And that is a good thing. A healthy democracy thrives on respectful disagreement and open dialogue. Council members bring different perspectives, and sometimes that leads to spirited discussion. It’s a sign of engagement, not dysfunction.

Throughout my 10 years on the town council, differences of opinion have always been part of the process. Each mayor brings their own style to leading through those moments. I’ve been clear about mine from day one: I listen, I learn and I encourage discussion. I lead with civility and do not believe in dominating conversations or provoking conflict. I have always been available to anyone who wishes to talk, though some prefer to speak out publicly without first seeking conversation. That is their right.

I expect my colleagues to demonstrate civility and respect to each other, our staff and our residents. We have been elected to manage important policy decisions. Showing good decorum in meetings is outlined in our Town Council Rules and Procedures.

The town is doing well. We have just finalized and approved our annual budget. This process is open to the public, and we’ve dedicated four council study sessions to ask questions, provide feedback and ensure clarity. Budgets are complex, and it’s important that we take the time needed to get it right.

I welcome questions and input from council members, staff, and residents on all town matters. I will always do my best to address your concerns or point you in the right direction. And I encourage everyone to attend council meetings, stay informed and remain engaged.

Thank you for the honor of serving as your mayor.
