Notre Dame Prep’s father-son duo creates family influence around team

Coaching as a father and treating the whole team like a big family

Notre Dame Preparatory boys varsity basketball team is having an exciting season. The Saints have lost only one game and are undefeated in region play.

They are showing why they’re one of the top teams in the state. However, that’s not the only thing interesting about this team.

Notre Dame Prep boys varsity basketball head coach Brad Quinet coaches his son, Bryce Quinet.

Brad Quinet coached his son since the third grade and helped shape his son’s game. Bryce Quinet is an exciting player with great hustle on the court and committed his basketball future to the University of Evansville, according to his coach and father.

Coach Quinet talked about the bond he has with his son and the connection they both have with the rest of the team.

“Bryce and I have a very strong bond on and off the court,” said Coach. “He has worked so hard over the years to prove people wrong. Bryce is also a student of the game with a high IQ. He is a division 1 commit because of that.

“To be able to have a player like that at the PG (point guard) position leading your team is invaluable. Bryce is also a very coachable young man that cares more about his team’s success than his own stats. I have been blessed to Coach Bryce ever since he was in the third grade. We have had really good teams and great experiences throughout the years. Bryce has had many different roles on my teams throughout all of these years.

“He went from corner shooter and defensive stopper to being the MVP on our team. Bryce has earned everything he has received. His work ethic is second to none. He helped lead our eighth grade AAU Under Armour team to a National Championship.

"We put a lot on Bryce’s shoulders, and I am harder on him than anyone else. His ability to deal with being pushed and also be the leader of this team is amazing to see in this day and age. He is an extension of me on the court.”

Teaching his son how to be a leader on the court and being pushed to the limit are prime examples of the positive coaching Coach Quinet presents on the court.

Coach Quinet family influence isn’t just with his son but the entire team as well.

“Bryce has a great bond with the players on our team,” Coach Quinet said. “That helps tremendously when building a team culture. I would be hard pressed to find a high school team out there that is more connected on and off the court. It is a group of coachable hard-working kids that buy into what we do.

“Play great defense and share the ball. I love this group of kids and wouldn’t change a thing about how the season has gone. I am lucky man to be able to coach my son during his senior season along with this great group of young men. It has been a great ride and we aren’t done yet.”

This father and son duo has been interesting to watch all season and has been one of the main factors towards the Saints' success. Coaching your son is a father’s dream and seeing him prosper on to the next level makes any parent very proud, Coach commented. As a spectator you can see the positive effect Coach Quinet has had on his son and the rest of the team.

Bryce Quinet says the valuable coaching he has received over the years with his father and the family bond he has with his teammates is a bonus.

“It has been a blessing to be able to learn from my father,” Bryce said. “Our relationship has grown so much from sharing the court together, and it has made my senior year an amazing experience.

“He has instilled hard work, perseverance, and winning into my game since day one, and I am truly thankful. Not only has he impacted me, but our whole team, too. This year we are the most connected that we have been throughout my four years, and we really operate like a band of brothers.”
