Five Notre Dame Prep students earned recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Announced on, Sept. 15, seniors Carlo Lanza, Keira Ryan and Madison White were named National Merit Commended Scholars.

Senior Radia Wong has earned the rank of a semifinalist and will continue in the competition in hopes to become a National Merit Scholarship winner.

“Being a National Merit semifinalist is a great honor,” Wong said in the release. “I’m really relieved that all my hard work has paid off.”

Wong was accepted as a Mensa member a year ago, the release said, noting Mensa is the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world. Its members rank in the 98th percentile for IQ worldwide.

Also, the National Merit announcement, College Board released the names of the 2021 National Hispanic Scholars.

Notre Dame Prep Saints with that recognition are juniors, Alejandro Heredia and Sophia Barlo and senior Jacob Wetherell among those announced nationwide.

“I am really proud of our students,” said NDP Principal Dr. Gene Sweeney in the release. “The habits and skills that they have developed have prepared them for college and beyond.

He added, “This recognition is something they should treasure because they have worked hard for it, and they will reap the benefits of it for years to come.”

Notre Dame Prep, 9701 E. Bell Road in Scottsdale, is a Catholic diocesan college preparatory high school with a co-ed enrollment of 875 students.

The school has received national recognition for the caliber of its academic, arts and athletic programs.
