“Time itself is neutral; it can be used either destructively or constructively.” In his Letter from a Birmingham Jail he suggested that people of ill will have used time more effectively than those of good will. As we move into 2025 Dr. Martin L. King, Jr’s prophecy unfortunately seems to be manifesting itself.
Current affairs seem to indicate the country may be headed into a period that is focusing more on division rather than unity. In his writing from the Birmingham Jail Dr. King further states his view on time by saying, “somewhere we must come to see that human progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of dedicated individuals who are willing to be co-workers with God.”
His writing about the destructive or constructive use of time presents a challenging question for all of us to examine, what are we doing to create the good we desperately need in these trying times?
As I interpret the spirit and intent of the collective work of Dr. Maritn L. King, Jr., I am reminded of various scriptures and parables in the Book of Matthew (King James Version) that instructs people to use the talents we have been given in productive ways. Thus, I strive to help others by using my talents to create harmony and understanding.
Receiving recognition by the Baha’is of Paradise Valley in partnership with the Town of Paradise Valley in January 2024 was affirming and deeply appreciated. The organizing group works hard and is to be commended for the tremendous effort to sow seeds of unity. This event is an example of the types of gatherings needed often to bring people together from different backgrounds to develop the “beloved community” envisioned by Dr. Martin L. King, Jr.
If I treat people the way I want to be treated, then I hope maybe goodness and unity is generated. I encourage everyone to attend the 2025 event on Jan. 20 at the Paradise Valley Town Hall starting at 11 a.m.
