Holland Center releases January lifelong learning schedule

Holland Center releases January lifelong learning schedule

The Holland Center in Scottsdale, which aims to enrich the community through arts, education and community services, has released its schedule of lifelong learning classes for January.

According to a press release, the center will offer:

• Art and Conversation: Artists with Issues with Nicolette – Fri. Jan. 6, 10-11:30 a.m.

  • The Art and Conversation topic for January is “Artists with Issues”. We all know “normal” is only a setting on the dryer. However, we all have issues… and you will enjoy seeing how these artists took theirs and made amazing art. Join in person or on Zoom.  

• Learn to do Realistic Watercolors – Tuesdays, Jan. 10, 17, 24, 31, 9 a.m.– 12 p.m.

  • This four-session watercolor workshop is designed for beginners and those current watercolorists who want to achieve more realistic techniques. Instructor Larry Charles will teach five techniques for capturing landscapes. Expect to see one instructor demo during each three-hour class and plan to complete at least one watercolor each session. You will be sent a supply list when you register, and you need to bring these items to the class. Class cost: $200. 

• Introduction to Mindful Meditation, Level 2 – Wed., Jan. 11,18, Feb. 1,8,15,22. 8:30-9:30am.

  • In this six-week class which builds upon Level 1, students will progress with the fundamentals of mindful meditation practice. This class uses the basic foundations of meditation practice to deepen and explore your mindfulness journey. Instructor Daniel Wayne is a certified mindfulness teacher trained at the Engaged Mindfulness Institute. Class cost: $70. 

• Introduction to Mindful Meditation, Level 1 – Wed., Jan. 11, 18, Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

  • In this six-week class, you will learn the fundamentals of mindful meditation practice. Designed for beginners, this class demonstrates and explains how to meditate, what to do while meditating, and why meditation can transform your daily life. The instructor will lead guided meditations during class sessions. Instructor, Daniel Wayne is a Certified Mindfulness Teacher trained at the Engaged Mindfulness Institute. Class cost: $70.

• The Wild West: The Oregon Trail – Jim Sherbert Lecture Series – Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 4–5:30 p.m.

  • As a kickoff to Jim Sherbert’s series The Western Frontier (1820s–1840s), Jim has chosen to start with Westward Migration and the Oregon Trail. From Lewis and Clark to the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, Jim will provide details of the harrowing journey by wagon from Independence, Mo. to Portland, Ore. -- a distance of 2100 miles. A $10 donation is gladly accepted at the door.

• White Flower Collage – Wed., Jan. 18, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

  • Join award-winning paper collage artist, Mimi Damrauer, for a simple and fun Paper Flower Making Art Class. Spend an art session crafting with paper and a glue gun! In this class, you will learn how to construct a beautiful elegant white paper flower collage wall art that can be used in any room. Bring your lunch or try out our new cafe. There will be a short lunch break. Class cost: $125. 

• Adjusting to Change in Purpose as We Age – Wed., Jan. 18 at 10 am.

  • Join a new women’s group that has just formed. We all have stories worth sharing, and this is the perfect opportunity. Some of the topics that our guide will bring up are marriage and children, health challenges, death or caring for a loved one, adjusting to a career change, what it means to grow older, and retirement. Cookies will be provided and coffee will be available. This workshop is free, but the Holland Community Center is very grateful for any donation. $10 is suggested. Register to ensure there is a seat for you.

• Private and Corporate Art Lost at the World Trade Center on 9/11. Wed., Jan. 18, at 10:30 a.m.

  • Over $110 million dollars in Public and Corporate Art was lost at the World Trade Center on 9/11. This art consisted of paintings, sculptures, murals, lithographs, photographs, furniture, porcelains, and many more. Mary F. Cook, a Member of the International Foundation for Art Research in NYC will provide you with the stories and details of this lost art in a lecture on Jan. 18 from 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m. This lecture is free, but donations at the door are gratefully accepted. Please register below as we expect a large turnout and we want to make sure we have enough seats. This is the first lecture in the Spotlight Series.

• Travel Art Journal Collage – Thurs., Jan. 19. 1-4 p.m.

  • Join award-winning paper collage artist, Mimi Damrauer, for a simple and fun Travel Journal Collage Class. Spend an art session creating artwork using your own ephemera from a favorite trip and Mimi’s many art supplies! Learn how to make small artwork that you will personalize for a memorable souvenir from one of your travels using painting, rubber stamping & loose sketching. The class will be 3 hours long, and the $60 fee includes all of your supplies. All you need to do is show up.

• Gelli Prints 101 Basic Class – Mon. Jan. 30, 9 a.m.–12 p.m.

  • Mimi Damrauer has prepared a fun class for learning to paint paper in Gelli Printing 101. You will be making quality prints with inexpensive materials, learning how to add texture and developing your images with rubber stamping and basic texture tools. Mimi Damrauer is a local working artist, who has been teaching classes in the Valley for years. Her work has been featured in Crate and Barrel and is collected for private and corporate collections. Bring an apron to class or wear “art clothes”. Class cost: $60.

• Open Studio with Larry Charles – Tues. Jan. 31, 1-4 p.m.

  • Larry Charles is providing Open Studio time every month! Here’s a chance to paint or draw under the supervision of an accomplished artist, who is eager to inspire you to try different mediums and subject matters. He will be doing this once a month on Tuesday afternoons. You can paint in oil, acrylic, or watercolor, or draw with colored pencils and regular pencils. You must bring your own art supplies. You can use this time to try something new or practice the techniques that you have learned from Larry’s classes. Class cost: $40.
