HITH names Scottsdale resident Napier for directory cover artist

Hidden in the Hills, scheduled for Friday through Sunday, Nov. 20-22 and Nov. 27-29, has chosen Jason Napier’s whimsical bronze Jackrabbit for the cover of Hidden in the Hills Artist Directory.

The nonprofit Sonoran Arts League, according to a press release, has announced that Arizona’s largest and longest-running artist studio tour, Hidden in the Hills free, self-guided tour features more than 150 artists at 41 private studios throughout the scenic Desert Foothills communities of Cave Creek, Carefree and North Scottsdale.

Best known for his fanciful, larger-than-life and table-top sculptures of wildlife, Mr. Napier’s bronze “Weedeater” was among more than 100 pieces of diverse fine art entries submitted for consideration of the HITH cover art during an online juried selection process.

The first year participating in Hidden in the Hills, he will exhibit and sell his work at glass artist Mark Lewanski’s studio in Scottsdale.

The Scottsdale bronze artist Mr. Napier’s whimsical jackrabbit, “Weedeater,” which will be featured on the cover of this year’s four-color artist directory, was inspired by a hike with his wife, Danielle.

“Danielle and I were hiking up Granite Mountain when we saw what we thought was a coyote,” said Mr. Napier in a prepared statement.

“But as we got closer, we realized that it was a big jackrabbit eating what looked like a dead desert daisy. He had such big ears and long legs that we couldn’t help but laugh. I immediately knew I had to sculpt him.”

He and his wife were thrilled that “Weedeater” was chosen as this year’s cover art, especially since the Hidden in the Hills artist directory is a collectible.

“I’m looking forward to showcasing medium and large-sized limited editions of ‘Weedeater’, and I’m already working on new bronzes that I will unveil during the studio tour,” said Mr. Napier a self-taught artist whose career spans nearly three decades.

HITH co-chair and mixed media sculptor/studio host Joanie Wolter described Mr. Napier’s distinct style as one “that exudes motion and expresses the playful spirit of every subject.

“We had many wonderful entries, but ‘Weedeater’ won our hearts for this year’s cover art,” said Ms. Wolter in a prepared statement.

“Jason is masterful with his form and he brings each piece to life with rich and colorful patina finishes.”
