Heard Museum features ‘Maria Hupfield: Nine Years Towards the Sun’

The Heard Museum’s newest exhibition: “Maria Hupfield: Nine Years Towards the Sun” opens with free admission on First Friday at Heard Museum from 6-10 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6.

Opening day includes an exclusive performance by Ms. Hupfield as the exhibition takes place throughout several spaces and range in content from performance, sculptural installation, video and document, according to a press release.

The works on view will be activated in real time by the artist and a team of collaborators through movement, sound, memory and documentation, said the release.

The Heard Museum --- institution empowers women in the arts space, providing an outlet to showcase and celebrate their work --- will be home to Ms. Hupfield’s first solo show in the U.S. at a time where solo shows at U.S. institutions are 78% male and 22% female, according to the release, noting an 8% decrease from 2016.

More than 40 works by the conceptual performance artist will be featured at the exhibition, curated by Heard Museum Fine Arts Curator Erin Joyce, the release said.

The works on view will be activated through movement, sound, memory, documentation, and collaboration and will function as a living archive, “which continually replenishes itself with content throughout its five-month run.”

The exhibition plays with notions of a continuum of culture, entering into conversation with thematic elements from major movements and artists within the 20th century art historical canon.

Heard Museum is  located 2301 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix.
