Gonzales: Don’t let titles fool you in SUSD board election

As we approach the election for three new school board members in SUSD, we can all agree that the stronger our public schools, the stronger our communities.
We must consider what qualifications and experience we think are important when it comes to strong school board members who will represent us, the parents and taxpayers of SUSD.
I question Ms. DeFusco’s recent expressed support for candidate Donna Lewis, citing her extensive experience as a teacher and administrator as a strong qualification for our board. While these educational titles may sound good, a review of the Arizona Department of Education’s AZ Report Cards tool reveals that only 9% of sixth grade students at Creighton Elementary School District, where Lewis served as superintendent, are proficient in math.
We must also question why a former school district superintendent who has never had anything to do with SUSD before, now wants to volunteer for a board position under the slogan “Protect SUSD.” What does she and her counterparts feel our district needs protection from?
It’s also of concern that on the Democratic “Blog for Arizona” Lewis says that she is not going to engage in culture wars and thinks they are an invented issue. She also shares her belief that children can have “various identities” related to gender and sexuality. She argues that laws should not restrict which bathrooms children use, but rather respect their chosen gender.
Thankfully, candidates Gretchen Jacobs, Jeanne Beasley and Drew Hassler – parents who have had children in Scottsdale schools – are committed to prioritizing academic achievement and ensuring parents remain the ultimate decision-makers in their children's education.
Our public schools and our students' future are at stake. Join my family in voting for Jacobs, Beasley and Hassler. Let's strengthen our schools and community by electing leaders who truly reflect our values.
