Black Theatre Troupe to stage Langston Hughes’ Christmas classic in Phoenix

Black Theatre Troupe presents Langston Hughes' celebrated song play “Black Nativity” – the moving retelling of the Nativity story brought to life through gospel music, dance, and spoken word.

The production will run from Friday, Dec. 6 to Sunday, Dec. 15 at the Helen K. Mason Performing Arts Center, 1333 E. Washington St., in Phoenix.

Directed by Tony Wheaton, “Black Nativity” offers the power of gospel music, the elegance of dance, and the timeless poetic brilliance of Hughes. Featuring a cast of local gospel talent, this production breathes new life into a classic story.

“‘Black Nativity’ is not just the powerful words of literary giant Langston Hughes, but also at its heart a musical celebration of African American culture and heritage,” David J. Hemphill, Black Theatre Troupe executive director, shared in a press release. “The show offers a unique perspective on the Nativity story, highlighting the universal themes of love, faith, and the importance of community.”
