The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) and the Better Business Bureau serving the Pacific Southwest (BBB) are searching for the next BBB Ethical Athlete.
High school athletes in Arizona who uphold moral principles in public are recognized with the BBB Ethical Athlete Scholarship, according to a press release.
AIA and BBB are currently accepting nominations from members of the community such as parents, coaches, teachers and students.
“Applications tell the tale of the qualities that distinguish a student as a moral athlete and exemplary person both on and off the court,” the press release reads.
A group of local judges will choose one winner every month until Feb. 28, 2025. Each selected student will receive a $1,000 scholarship and contend for the Ethical Champion scholarship worth an additional $2,500 in the spring. Nominations will be carried over each month, and students may be nominated multiple times.
Jack Strang, a former Horizon High School scholarship recipient, was recognized for educating another student on the importance of honesty in leadership. Instead of reporting the unethical action to his teacher, he urged his fellow student to act the right way.
“Golf and baseball have been an important part of my life, defining not only my physical ability but also my personality,” Strang said. “Winning this scholarship is a testament to everyone who has supported and believed in me.”
Arizona high school athletes with a GPA of at least 2.75 and are enrolled in an AIA sanctioned school while competing in an AIA sanctioned sport are eligible to be nominated for the award, the press release continues. Nominations for the scholarship are now being accepted at athlete.bbbcommunity.org.
