While it seems cold and flu season never really left, there is indeed an influx of viruses during winter months.
This is primarily due to two reasons:
Colder weather, allowing viruses to proliferate; and
Greater consumption of sugar and alcohol between Halloween and Super Bowl. Sugar wreaks havoc on the immune system and makes white blood cells (the ones that attack invaders) sluggish and unable to do their job. Alcohol also negatively impacts immune function by reducing antibodies and beneficial bacteria.
The best course of action to keep yourself from getting sick is to be proactive. The following tips can help you protect and fortify your immune system:
Limit sugar and alcohol consumption.
Consume ample fruits and vegetables daily
Ensure your vitamin D levels are optimal (between 60-80 ng/ml)
Take a multivitamin to fill gaps in your daily nutrition.
Stay hydrated.
You can also try getting intravenous (IV) nutrient therapy, which bypasses digestion and delivers nutrients directly to your bloodstream for optimal use. Some nutrients specific to immune support include vitamins B-complex, C and D; alpha-lipoic acid (ALA); glutathione; and zinc. Give your body what it needs and reduce what impedes it and you’ll have your best chance of staying healthy this winter season.
