United Way of Pinal County hosts golf tournament in April

To celebrate its 40th anniversary and support its Reading by 3rd Grade Initiative, United Way of Pinal County will be hosting its 40th Anniversary Golf Tournament on Saturday, April 30. This year’s tournament will take place at the Francisco Grande Golf Resort, 2684 W. Gila Bend Highway in Casa Grande.

The organization is looking for golfers of all skill levels to join in on what will be a fun event for a great cause. In addition to a day of golf on a beautiful course, there will be raffles, a 50/50 raffle, silent auction, longest-drive contest, closest-to-pin contest and more. All proceeds will fund Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library for Pinal County as part of the Reading by 3rd Grade Initiative.

The pandemic caused the 2020 and 2021 golf fundraisers to be canceled. However, in 2019 the organization raised $10,000 to support 400 Pinal County households receiving books. The organization’s goal for this year is $20,000.

The Reading by 3rd Grade Initiative is designed to improve literacy rates among young children, help increase high-school graduation rates and reduce future social system dependencies. Test scores in 2021 in Pinal County show that 75% of third graders were not reading proficiently.

All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Reading by 3rd Grade Initiative, in partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This program mails a new book each month to the homes of children 0-5 years of age in Pinal County to help develop early childhood literacy, initiate family bonding and connection, and develop a love for books and reading. Currently, United Way of Pinal County has more than 100 children on the waiting list for this program, and it is looking to expand into all areas of Pinal County.

Since 1981, United Way of Pinal County has served the county’s residents. During those 40 years, the organization has served communities in many ways, including founding homeless coalitions in Casa Grande and Apache Junction, preparing more than 7,000 tax returns at no cost, and putting more than 24,000 books into the hands of children in Pinal County.
