Register your antique car in Arizona with ease

Posted

Owning an antique or historic vehicle is a sense of pride for many car enthusiasts. For those antique car aficionados living in Arizona there are certain processes to legally register your antique vehicle so you can preserve the history of your car or truck.

Whether you are restoring a 1969 Shelby Cobra or driving a beat-up old Ford from 1940, here are a few steps you must follow to register your antique vehicle in Arizona.

Confirm eligibility

Just because you have an old car doesn’t mean it qualifies for antique registration. Make sure your vehicle qualifies for historic registration by visiting the MVD website for official information. In Arizona a vehicle, car or truck, is considered historic if it was built at least 25 years ago and is primarily maintained for exhibitions, club events, parades or similar situations, not everyday use.

A different registration is necessary for antique vehicles that you are still driving around. Be sure to visit your local MVD or local licensing office to make sure you have proper documentation for these old cars and trucks.

Required documentation

When registering your historic vehicle, you will need to gather up all documents for that car or truck. This includes proof of ownership, the title and Arizona registration documents. You will also need to present a valid Arizona license or state identification card along with proof of insurance for the vehicle.

In some cases, depending on where you might live, you may need an emissions test for the car. For cars pre-1967 your vehicle is exempt from these emission tests. However, post-1967 vehicles will have to go through emissions testing in most parts of Maricopa and Pima counties. If your vehicle is insured and designated as a classic or collectible vehicle then you are exempt regardless of the age of your vehicle.

Follow the state process

When it comes to registering your vehicle start off just like any other car you may own. Visit your local MVD or licensing office. Be sure to bring all the proper documentation for the vehicle such as titles, receipt of purchase or any other documentation you may have. Be prepared for the car or truck you present to be inspected when seeking historic or antique plates.

During this process you will have the opportunity to choose which license plates you want, such as historic, antique or classic. Upon approval, you will receive your new plates for your vehicle and be officially registered in the state of Arizona.

Pay the fees

When it comes to fees for registering an antique vehicle it varies based on the plate type and the vehicle’s classification. Historic plates are a one-time cost of $25, plus a $10 yearly fee, plus registration costs. Classic and antique registration follows standard fees. Simply, fill out the title registration application at your local MVD or licensing office. Once the application is approved you will receive your specialty plates in the mail.

ADOT will always mail your plate to you whether you apply at an MVD or a third-party provider. You can also receive a temporary tag for your car so you can drive until your official plates arrive. Place the tag on the rear of your car where your plate will go until you receive them so your vehicle will be legal on the road.

Following these few steps will allow you to be legal and ready to hit the road with your antique vehicle. Once you get your documentation in place and get proper registration you will be ready to hit the highways of Arizona and have many great experiences with your antique vehicle.
